SECOND FLOOR

At the top of the stairs, you may have noticed a similarity to the feeling you had when you first entered the Villa. After ascending the long, tight stairway, you turn at the landing to experience a large open space. Originally this was a bedroom that Wright converted into an upstairs living room. It was also called the music room, as Nelle had her Victorian grand piano in this space.

Wright’s touches are also evidenced in the flat wood trim and French doors that lead onto the sleeping porch allowing for the space to feel light, open and airy. The floors, while original, were refinished when the upper level was used as apartments by Forest Preserve rangers several years ago. The trim color throughout the house has darkened with age and exposure to varying conditions. The original stain was probably a warm medium oak color as was often used by Wright in his earlier years.

The library table in the hall and chair were owned by the Fabyans and reflect the eclectic mix of styles with which the Fabyans furnished their home.
