Juniors

FABYAN VILLA MUSEUM TOUR: 45 MINUTES

The 1907 Fabyan Villa is a re-designed Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie-style farm house. For this tour, Scouts will learn the unique history of the Fabyan family, the code-breaking that significantly influenced both World Wars and how the Fabyans became interested in Japanese culture.   Scouts will even learn how to break a bi-lateral cipher code! They will also see the Samurai suit, the infamous mummy, a marble statue from the 1893 Columbian Exposition, as well as the monkey and bear cages!

Fee: $3/Scout; Minimum Group Fee: $30

 

JAPANESE GARDEN TOUR:  30 MINUTES

This guided tour through the Fabyan Japanese Garden is the perfect place to explore Japanese garden design and history with your scouts.  A staff member will lead your group through the Japanese style tea garden where they will see a waiting bench chamber, a tea house and different style lanterns. The guide will point out different types of trees and plants that are historic to the over 100 year old garden, as well as those chosen for their Japanese style.  At the end of the tour scouts will be able to identify the unique elements found in Japanese gardens.

Fee: $3/Scout; Minimum Group Fee: $30

Brownies

FABYAN VILLA ARTIFACT BINGO: 45 MINUTES

Brownies will be guided through the museum as they play a matching game with artifacts and important architectural elements in the house. Guides will explain the importance of items that the scouts are looking for and also give a history of the house itself using pictures and interesting stories about the estate.  After the game, your group will know about Frank Lloyd Wright, the Riverbank Acoustic labs and why the Fabyans had an interest in Japanese art and culture.

Fee: $3/Scout; Minimum Group Fee: $30

 

ESTATE TREASURE HUNT: 40 MINUTES

Guides will take Brownies through the west side of the Fabyan Forest Preserve as they search for clues that lead to a special treasure! Guides will show scouts historic photos and tell the history of the former Riverbank estate.  At the end of the tourBrownies will be able to identify specific historic elements still on the property and understand why they were important to the history of the estate.

Boy Scouts

FABYAN VILLA MUSEUM TOUR: 45 MINUTES

A guided tour will give insight into the lives of George and Nelle Fabyan, owners of the home from 1905 to 1939.  Scouts will learn through stories and pictures how the Fabyans amassed over time a 300 acre estate which they named “Riverbank.”  Scouts will discover the many facets of the estate includinga farm, greenhouses, gardens, fountains, pools, a boathouse, a 5-story windmill; they will explore the Fabyan collection, notably the Japanese Samurai suit, the infamous mummy and a marble statue from the 1893 Columbian Exposition.

Boy Scouts

ADVENTURE TO THE PAST:  60 MINUTES

Examining tools of the past is just one of the important components in the study of history.  For this program, Scouts will learn about tools that were used to build the 1843 Durant House. This hands on program will allow participants to compare tools of the past with what we use today.

Fee:  $4/Scout; Minimum Group Fee: $40

Cub Scouts

This program will follow the same format as the Boy Scout program above but on an age appropriate level.

GIRL SCOUTS

Juniors

LIFE AT THE DURANT HOUSE:  90 MINUTES

Scouts will have the opportunity to immerse themselves into the life of young Abba Durant during the 1850s.  They will tour the Durant House and hear the story of the Bryant Durant family, early settlers of the Fox Valley.  Scouts will also learn about the different toys available to the children of the 19th century. This interactive program includes activities and games of the past. (This program meets some of the requirements for the Playing the Past Badge.)

Brownies

THE DURANT STORY AND YOUR STORY:  90 MINUTES

Abba Durant’s diary illustrates the significance of her life events and how meaningful a young girl’s personal story can be.  Scouts will discuss events in their own lives and the importance of keeping a modern day journal. Scouts will also tour the 1843 Durant House, dress in 19th century clothing to act out a play, and discover and play games that amused children in the 19th century.(This program meets some of the requirements for the My Family Story Badge.)
